The place is mentioned as a settlement in early Middle Ages and as a fortress– from the beginning of the 13th century.

Khachkars from the Armenian cemetery below the walls of the fortress. Unfortunately, during the time Karabakh was in the Soviet Azerbaijan, not only buildings became derelict or were destroyed but even graveyards and gravestones were intentionally demolished.
