Handaberd is another fortress in that part of the historical Khachen region, which though part of Artsakh, was left outside of the NKAO when it was annexed to Azerbaijan in 1921 and when the NKAO was formed in 1923.

The district is now renamed Shahumyan and offers some of the most picturesque scenes in Karabakh.

The fortress, above the river Lev, was built in the second quarter of the 9th century.
