Jraberd

Jraberd

Jraberd fortress literally means “water fortress” as it was built on an elevation on the spot where two rivers, the Trtu (Tartar) and Trghi joined and made it virtually unassailable. It is in the Martakert region of  the NKR, in a very picturesque setting. It was built in the 7th century and served as the stronghold of Melik-Israyelyans, the rulers of the Jraberd Principality (melikutyun).
