The Museum of Tigranakert

The Museum of Tigranakert

Occupied.

Of the four cities built by Tigran the Great (95-55 BC) and named after him, at least one was certain to be in Artsakh. It was discovered in 2005 by the Artsakh archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. The expedition has unearthed a section of the Citadel, the rocky foundations of the Fortified district, the Central district, a basilica church of that district from a later, early Christian period, and some other sections. Tigranakert Museum, just on the site of the ancient city, was a modern, well-organized museum frequented by visitors before it was occupied again by the Azeris in 2020.

A coloured vessel discovered from the area of Tigranakert dates back to the 1st century BC- AD 1st century.
This part of a column from the basilica is from 4-6th centuries.
